On the eve of the 21st Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina devastating New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, we will remember the contributions of the immigrant workers who helped rebuild our city but are now being targeted by indiscriminate mass deportation policies that are tearing apart families and causing the children of Katrina immigrant workers incalculable grief and trauma. We will pray for immigrant families, our collective futures, and for Congress to pass humane immigration reform legislation that recognizes the dignity of every human life, keeps families together, and helps our country to prosper.

Speakers: A mother whose children continue to suffer from the trauma of losing their father to deportation nine years ago; Pastors from three churches suffering the loss of faithful parishioners and loving parents swept up in cruel and senseless indiscriminate mass deportations in the past 20 months, and three child therapists treating the toxic stress and psychological trauma in the children of immigrant parents lost to detention/deportation.

This event is being organized by the St. Anthony of Padua Social Justice Committee and the Love Your Immigrant Neighbor Initiative. Faith Leaders and Faith Groups are encouraged to sign-in at the event to be recognized during the program.

Faith leaders from across Louisiana will gather Saturday, August 22, 2026 for a press conference followed by an interfaith Service of Public Prayer & Witness.

The gathering will focus on the treatment of immigrant neighbors across Louisiana and growing concerns about immigration enforcement, detention, family separation, and due process. It also comes as plans move forward for a facility at England Airpark intended to detain immigrant families and children.

Faith leaders will call on public officials at every level to protect human dignity, family unity, due process, and the safety of immigrant communities. They will also urge leadership connected with England Airpark to cancel agreements supporting ICE detention operations and halt development of the proposed family and child detention center.
