Faith and Order Commission
Report to the Fall Meeting
Submitted by
Bishop D. Bruce MacPherson, Chair
The work of the Faith and Order Commission, as with much of the activity across the State of Louisiana, was impaired this past year by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. Our prayers continue to be offered for those who have been displaced by the tragedy and for those who continue to seek a sense of stability in their lives.
The Commission was scheduled to meet on August 30, 2005 to begin discussion and reflection on the document “Mary, Grace and Hope in Christ.” This document is the work of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC). With the plans for this meeting in place, the arrival of Hurricane Katrina the day before brought about cancellation.
The Commission is now scheduled to meet for discussion and reflection of this same document on August 31, 2006 at 12:00 noon and hosted by the Immaculata Center, Lafayette.
Other work addressed by the Commission during the past twelve months was the review of the document “Mutual Recognition and Mutual Reconciliation of Ministries” that was produced by Churches Uniting in Christ (CUIC). This document is a continuation of the work that has been going on for more than forty years as we have sought to, as stated in the document, “give expression to our oneness in Christ: through common warship, witness, service, and mission ...”
The meeting was hosted by Trinity CME Church, Lafayette on April 4, 2006. While participation was limited, it was felt by those in attendance that the day was well worth the endeavour and the outcome of our discussions, fruitful.
It is the hope of the Commission on Faith and Order to be able to engage in further study, reflection and discussion in the coming year on issues facing the larger ecumenical setting.
