Business

Session

Highlights:

Along with the exciting news of two new member Judicatories, the

below touches on other areas of business conducted by the Board:

*  A Hortatory Immigration Resolution was approved.

Click here for full text of this.

*  It was noted that all Judicatory Leaders have signed on to the Bread or Stones Resolution (anti-child poverty initiative), which paves the way for further action in this endeavor.

*  Tribute was given to recently deceased Board Member, Mrs. Betty Cummings; and to honor soon-retiring Board Member, Rev. Susan Gaumer.

*  The 2014 draft Budget was approved with some salary and other expense cuts, as necessary to balance.  However, it is hoped that additional funds will be found later which can allow restoration of the salary cuts.

2014 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity planning.  As was suggested by the Faith and Order Commission Members, the Roman Catholic Bishops are to spearhead efforts for statewide involvement between denominations, for 2014.   The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is held annually from Jan 18th - Jan 25th.

     Around 40 people from around the state attended the Fall Board Sessions.  The Rev. Dr. Ted Campbell, of Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, TX, was the Keynote Speaker, interjecting humor along the way even as he dealt with weightier matters.  Monday's presentation was titled: “Ecumenism and the rumored death of Old-Line Churches”.   Tuesday's presentation was titled:  “The contemporary challenge of enunciating consensus in our churches".  Click here to be taken to a printable document containing outlines/summaries of both presentations, including graphs showing various Church memberships from 1976 to 2010.

An Evening of Worship Together:

Our thanks to Rev. George Wortham and the members of Highland Presbyterian Church for hosting and participating in the evening Ecumenical Worship Service

on September 23rd, 2013

   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our thanks to Rev. Dale Farley (ELCA - N. TX/N. LA Synod) for his eloquent and often humorous deliverance of the evening sermon, and to the other clergy and lay leaders who contributed to the service as well.  Pastor Farley spoke of the importance of Unity among Christ's followers - stating that it doesn't mean 'conformity' in practice & language.  Unity is a gift from God - it is a unity of purpose, direction, & mission.  Even as we can come together to help each other after disasters, we need to further active communion.
Pastor Dale Farley
And thanks to all who contributed to the offering for the
Endowment Fund for Christian Unity.
Almost $950.00 was raised!
